The second song from NightRanger comes on my iTunes player.   The first was Rumours in the Air.   Loved that song in high school.   Now “Sister Christian” by the same group.  Wow.   That really takes me back.   Something about the senses of smell and hearing.   It has been SOO long since my psychology classes about memory and perception.   But I vaguely recall that those 2 senses can elicit stronger memories than any other sight or touch.

What vividly comes to mind is sitting in the cold air under the KAYS radio tower in Hays, KS.   My friend and I, Joe Long, frequently trespassed over there to drink a quick 6-pack before the required check-in time at midnight.   (We were at a private Catholic school and it was strictly forbidden to drink…..but we were “good students/leaders” and we knew which of the priests and brothers would look the other way.)

And so there we were, checked out on the off-campus list, trying to slam a 6 as quickly as possible, so our breath would be “clean” at check-in after the vigorous chewing of a whole pack of Hubba Bubba Grape.   That was in case the dreaded Father Regis Scanlon was on check-in duty.   He would cut no one any slack.

Joe and I liked to go do our drinkin’ over there, especially after we were legal to drink at the age of 18.   Then, some of the faculty would really look the other way, b/c we were legal adults…..and it was Hays, the Capital of over-consumption.   They have Oktoberfest, after all.   And it is only a big drunk for all ages.

When we were sophomores, Joe and I were sent over into that field by Mrs. MAAAAArks.   (That was the way she pronounced it.)   Most normal people would simply call her Mrs. Marks.   So, she was from Brooklyn.  But kids like to make fun of people.   Anyway, were on task to measure the height of the radio tower over there by using a protractor and a weight hanging from it.

(Dreamweaver is on now…….Gary somebody wrote that…….a little before my time, but now it is a staple on classic rock stations.)

So there we were with our protractors and weights (rock with a string tied to the center of protractor.)   We took our measurements of the angle.  Then we paced off the distance from where we were standing to the base of the tower.  So, it is tangent of angle X times the distance to the tower, equals the height of tower.   My figuring came up to around 800 feet.

We all went back into class the next week and showed our work for Ge-AHHHH-metry class (that Brooklyn accent again.)   I guess I was OK, b/c all I can remember is that I got an A in the class.   Ohh, and I went to the station and asked them what the actual height was.   821 feet.   Pretty tall.   It sticks out in the treeless prairie of NW Kansas.   It was the only beacon we had to guide us back to the school at night if we were turned around.

I will always remember that tower and the height.   I don’t know if it is because I was so close in estimating it, or because I miss those days.

1.1.07      Today’s blog is my extensive to-do list, which I must keep on a spreadsheet to keep my “brain” organized.   I re-prioritize most of the items frequently, and update it and print it daily.   I could not function efficiently without it.   Some would argue that I still do not.
